Where to?

You have the choice of travelling north or south along the canal.

All trips start and finish at our Nash Mills base. This is on the Grand Union Canal to the south of Hemel Hempstead at Nash Mills Wharf, a small turning off Red Lion Lane between Apsley and Kings Langley where the railway crosses the A4251.

There is ample free parking at the base. Trips start at your choice of time, with finishing time dependent on daylight hours during the winter.

Travelling northwards

This takes you potentially as far as Winkwell on a full day trip or to Two Waters Road (B&Q) for shorter trips.  Travelling through Hemel Hempstead, you’ll experience that strange feeling of knowing – and not knowing – the local landscape from the canal’s hidden, leafy route through town.  Frequent locks on the route will keep the crew busy, and you too if you wish.

In this direction, there’s the option of a stop to visit the interesting Hemel Food Garden and Farm Shop canal side just to the south of B&Q.  On offer is a short guided tour of the site, tastings of “Wobbly Bottom” cheese and apple juice and a browse around other shop produce, hand-made decorations and gifts.   Please tell us when you book if you’d like to include this visit in your itinerary.

Travelling southwards

A full day trip will take you to Grove Mill (to the north of Watford) and back. Shorter trips turn at Hunton Bridge. This is a very rural route but again you’ll experience the occasional new perspective on familiar major landscape features. Again there are locks, but they are more distantly spaced.
