Volunteering

We are an all-volunteer charity with no paid employees, so we depend 100% on the willingness and commitment of local people to get involved in running and managing things. Above all, you need to be enthusiastic and committed to our cause of helping the disadvantaged to enjoy the pleasures associated with exploring our local canal by boat.

A recent survey of our volunteers showed that they greatly value the comradeship and ethos of our all-volunteer organisation. We’re a friendly, light-hearted group bringing a great diversity of different skills.  As well as boat crew and maintenance workers, over 50 volunteers work in largely desk-based roles.  Many of them also enjoy crewing the boats for our clients.

HQ is our Nash Mills boat base, just off Red Lion Lane. We don’t have an office that’s open every day, but depend on volunteers with desk-based roles working independently from their own homes at times that suit them, using their own technology to access Google Drive and apps for emails and documents etc.  All the while there’s strong support from colleagues at the end of a phone or online.

Wednesday mornings are an important focus of both indoor and outdoor work, and finish with a sociable hot lunch, cooked of course by our wonderful volunteer chef! The base is open on other days too, depending on when boats are booked out for trips and when groups of volunteers arrange meetings and working parties.

We pay reasonable  expenses where work involves travel to the boat base.  Each volunteer is part of a departmental team, guided by an experienced team leader.

We keep this website up to date with current vacancies. If you think one of these might suit you, please complete and submit the expression of interest form and someone will get in touch with you – generally  within a week.

If you don’t find any voluntary work that sounds right for you today, we hope you’ll revisit this page to check for updates. Or feel free to drop an email to membership@wexp.org.uk telling us a little bit about your skills and availability for volunteering and one of the team will get back to you. We usually have opportunities for experienced administrators.

As a tiny organisation, we concentrate our training activities on boat handling, boat crew and skipper development.  We are not able to provide more general skills training.

Not local to Hemel Hempstead?

We have a few places on each of our Enable Holiday trips for one-off volunteering. This would suit you if you don’t live locally or can’t commit to regular crewing year round.  For more information visit our Enable Holidays pages.
